Unitex came into existence in 1982 in Kannur when
two men with vast experience in fabric production and readymade
garments decided to enter into partnership and launch a
business of their own.
Kannur, in the southern state of Kerala is one of the traditional
loom centers of India. Both C.K. Sahadevan and C.K. Jayanath,
the founders of the business that later came to be called
as Unitex Fashions in Chennai, hail from this district and
both were born and brought up in families who were traditional
handloom weavers and fabric manufacturers.
C.K.Sahadevan's family owned handloom units
in Kannur. His stints in various factories in Bangalore,
Chennai and Kannur broadened his knowledge and extended
his experience.
C.K.Jayanath
comes from a family of fabric manufacturers and he gained
professional experience right from his school days, in his
family's fabric production units. He is an expert with various
fabrics and weaves, with a good knowledge of different natural
and man-made fibers. With his experience in textile manufacturing,
he started exporting readymade garments from Kannur under
the company name of Kerala Exports.
This
firm was later renamed as Unitex Fashions, a partnership
firm, in 1995. Recently, the organization was registered
as a private limited company- Unitex Fashions (India)
Private Limited.
